project 1: application of basic building services

Project 1 is an individual assignment which will work on the basic application of building services. Students are introduced
to the four (4) major types of services available, which are electrical supply system, cold water and hot water supply system, sewage and sanitary system, storm water and drainage system in order to make a building function. Each student will be assigned to design the systems required from a building plan given. Roof plan will need to be established from the floor plan given. Firstly, students will need to understand how systems in building services work and later apply them by drawing the systems in the plans.

This assignment will require drawings and diagrams that include specifications, symbols, legends, images, texts and whichever information deem relevant to describe the planning and installation of all the building services learnt. Additionally, students may also quote specific clauses from the Uniform Building By-Law (UBBL) 1984 or other relevant acts, laws or guidelines which relate to the proposed systems into their presentation boards.

project 2: building services in public buildings

Project 2 is a group project to perform an analysis on building services systems found in multi-storey buildings. Students will be introduced to systems that are used on bigger volume of spaces and variety of users. This exercise requires students to develop a design from their design studio project and incorporating the systems to the building. It is important for the students to understand the mechanism of the systems to produce a comprehensive and informative report.

Work in a group of 6, each group is required to choose one of the group member’s design scheme from Semester 4 Design Studio project which is Centre for The Elderly. Each group is to perform a thorough study and analysis of the following services systems associated to the building: -
i. mechanical ventilation
ii. air-conditioning system
iii. fire protection system (active and passive fire protection system)
iv. mechanical transportation system (elevator and escalator/ travellator systems
