project 1: roof truss

Truss is a structure built up of three or more members which are normally considered being pinned and hinged at the joints. The following figure shows different types of trusses, perfect and redundant. Load applied to the truss is transmitted to joint so that each individual members are in either pure tension or compression.

In a group of 5 members, select the design of one of the members in studio 3. Working in a group, students are required to re-design the roof of that building by using truss designs. By using any material of our own choice, construct the model of the design. The size of the model must be appropriate to fit well on an A2 board. Besides that, students will also need to complete a trusses analysis exercise.

project 2: structural analysis of a bungalow

The project is an integrated component where it involves structural theory, force calculation and basic structural proposal. This project is designed to allow the demonstration of knowledge and understanding of building structure. This project divided into 2 parts- group and individual.

Part 1 – 15% (Group components)
Working in a group of 3 members, each group is to design a 2 storey bungalow which consist of the following components:
1.    1 master bedroom with attached bathroom
2.    Minimum 3 bedrooms
3.    2 bathrooms
4.    Kitchen
5.    Living hall
6.    Dining area
7.    1 store room.

The building layout should be a combination of building outline shown in category A and B attached. Next, students are required to carry out structural framing for the building (to design the skeleton of the structural).

Part 2 – 25% (Individual components)
Each student is required to:
1.    To analysis minimum 6 beams (each beam must subject to different types of load, i.e. UDL from one or more than one slabs, beam with point load(s) or combination of UDL and PL)
2.    To analysis minimum 3 columns (from roof to foundation level)
